there are two preparatory activities to do on the core to adopt the project outline proposed by Antonio V:

• converting the core managers to @Component Spring and consequently reviewing the GUI so that managers are injected by Spring instead of being explicitly instantiated via a new (called in short, it must be detailed in an issue);    

• update the Spring version to 5 (here too an issue must be created);

@Paolo Viotti suggested to adopt the standard maven layout on the projects and this will be done as soon as possible. Also, it will be considered to publish artifacts on the Maven Central Repository to simplify the setup of a development environment
